The Interlake cross country team is an up and coming program in the very competitive 3A King County Cross Country Conference. Led by Brad Barquist for the men's team and Jami Mickelson for the women's team, the team has doubled in size over the past few years and is on the verge of bringing back a winning tradition of men's and women's cross country dominance to Interlake High School. Brad Barquist is a former Interlake student who holds the record at Interlake for the fastest mile. He was a four letter winner in both tack and cross country at the University of Michigan and ran the 10,000 meter race at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Jami Mickelson is a slightly less decorated runner, but is a long-time distance runner and a highly qualified coach.
You have to wonder at times what you're doing out there. Over the years, I've given myself a thousand reasons to keep running, but it always comes back to where it started. It comes down to self-satisfaction and a sense of achievement. Just stick your nose in there and bang on it.
